Interventions to support access to healthy food

Inclusive Nutrition

JGU is committed to providing inclusive nutrition that supports the physical and mental well-being of every community member. Central to this commitment are all-you-can-eat buffet-style meal services available in all major dining halls, ensuring students, staff, and even contract workers have equitable and reliable access to ample nutrition throughout the day. Campus meals are intentionally designed with a high proportion of whole grains especially millet, in accordance with India’s year of the millet focus and an abundant variety of fresh fruits, legumes, and locally sourced vegetables. Nutrition counseling is readily available through on-campus dietitians and wellness advisors, empowering individuals to manage medical conditions, respect cultural or religious dietary needs, and optimize their overall diet for health and performance. Menus are revised based on both expert guidance and direct community feedback, resulting in an evolving array of healthy and inviting options that leave nobody behind.

Community Outreach

JGU’s approach to food access extends beyond the traditional dining hall model. Inspired by feedback from students and workers alike, the university is rolling out satellite meal points in key off-campus locations, making it possible for those who live, study, or work outside the core campus area to receive nourishing meals with ease. The SDR 2025 reports significant improvements in the nutritional quality of food provided at staff and faculty events, reflecting a campus-wide shift towards higher standards for every meal service. Regularly scheduled camps, outreach events, and awareness drives support the dissemination of nutrition knowledge and reinforce healthy behaviors within the broader campus cohort and adjacent communities. These interventions are rooted in JGU’s commitment to social equity, community resilience, and proactive healthcare.

Food Bank Access

In response to the reality that financial crises, health setbacks, or sudden personal emergencies can threaten a person’s access to regular meals, JGU is establishing a dedicated food bank a safe, discreet, and universally accessible resource for anyone in need. The food bank will operate on a confidential, stigma-free basis, allowing students, staff, and workers to request support without fear of judgement or bureaucratic burden. Access will include not just staple ingredients, but varied, healthy, and culturally adaptive meal kits, underpinned by the same standards of nutrition and sustainability as the broader campus dining program. The food bank’s design and outreach campaigns will actively counter stigma, inviting anyone facing hunger to step forward and be supported with dignity and compassion. This initiative provides the final, critical link in JGU’s holistic food security network, ensuring that no one is ever excluded from receiving the nourishment they need to thrive at the university.
