Education associated with food sustainability

Curriculum & Workshops

At O.P. Jindal Global University, education in food sustainability is woven into the fabric of academic life, empowering future leaders to tackle real-world challenges with knowledge and skill. The Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP) and the Jindal School of Environment and Sustainability (JSES) collaboratively embed topics such as food systems, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and food justice within their curriculum. This commitment ensures students gain an interdisciplinary grasp of both theoretical and applied dimensions, from global supply chains to local food access and policies that shape health outcomes. Hands-on engagement is fostered through workshops like “Food for a Healthy Planet,” which bring together students, researchers, and external experts to explore the latest innovations and urgent issues in sustainable nutrition. These practical sessions are further enriched by real case studies, project-based assignments, and opportunities for peer-driven debate and collaboration.

Research & Field-Based Learning

JGU’s faculty and student teams actively participate in research projects aimed at understanding and improving food security across local and regional contexts. Field studies regularly take students beyond the classroom and into neighboring villages, where they work alongside agricultural communities to examine everyday realities, identify barriers to food access, and pilot innovative solutions. Recent research has focused on crop resilience, sustainable farming practices, nutrition education, and the advancement of women in agricultural leadership roles. These immersive experiences foster not only scientific inquiry, but also social empathy, collaboration, and service. Students are encouraged to design interventions, collect and analyze data, and share their findings through university forums, policy papers, and community dialogue sessions effectively bridging academic research with community impact.

Food Bank as Learning Site

The soon-to-be-launched JGU food bank is envisioned as more than a support facility it will be a living laboratory for hands-on education in food sustainability. By partnering with faculty, student clubs, and service teams, the food bank will host integrated learning modules on logistics management, supply-chain optimization, safe food handling, and operational policy development. Students will be able to participate in the design and management of the bank, conduct impact evaluation studies, and recommend improvements for equitable distribution and community health outcomes. As a result, the food bank will nurture not only direct relief for those in need, but also a new generation of graduates equipped with real-world experience in sustainable food systems, public health, and social enterprise.
