Water reuse measurement

At JGU, we have a strong commitment to maximising water reuse across campus. All water released after use in hostel washrooms, kitchens, and residential areas becomes grey water or wastewater, which is then directed to our seven Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). These plants treat the water using physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove contaminants and produce treated water that is safe for multiple non-potables uses.

The STP-treated water is reused extensively throughout campus, including:

  • Horticulture and irrigation
  • Cooling towers
  • Toilet flushing
  • Construction activities such as curing, water sprinkling, and truck tyre washing
  • Gardening, floor washing, dust suppression, and other campus maintenance

Hot water recirculation pumps further enhance efficiency by keeping hot water lines in circulation during winters, preventing unnecessary drainage of cold water, and ensuring hot water is always available.

All water reused on campus is measured via flow metres to track usage and improve efficiency. Our design and operations teams plan and execute all activities in the most sustainable and resource-efficient manner feasible, ensuring minimal water wastage.

Importantly, no water is discharged outside the university, which means that 100% of the water consumed on campus is reused, closing the loop on our water systems and demonstrating responsible water stewardship.

This approach significantly conserves freshwater, reduces environmental impact, and sets a benchmark for sustainable water management in an institutional setting.
