O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) places the holistic health and well-being of its community at the very core of campus strategy, recognizing the multifaceted challenges faced across physical and mental wellness in India. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1 in 7 Indian adults require care for one or more mental health conditions, yet the sharp gap in availability of trained mental health professionals poses an ongoing challenge. Professor Derick H. Lindquist, Dean of Jindal School of Psychology & Counselling, underscores that while many mental health conditions can be effectively treated at low cost, the gulf between those in need and those with access to competent care remains profound. Globally, depression affects at least 280 million people and in 2017, the WHO designated India as the world’s “most depressed country.” Although rankings have improved in the years since, depression, anxiety, and related issues still place enormous personal and societal burdens upon individuals, families, and educational institutions alike.
At JGU, this urgent national and global context has driven a proactive expansion of mental health services, counseling, awareness drives, and campus-wide peer support. Robust clinical and preventative resources such as the Health Centre, CWCS, Sukoon Centre for Mental Health, and partnerships with virtual care platforms now anchor well-being at the heart of daily campus life. Recent achievements include 24/7 access to emergency response, highly participated in health screening and blood donation camps, subsidized diagnostic testing, and expanded coverage for contract workers, students, and staff. Mindfulness, yoga, and fitness programs accompany academic advocacy campaigns that foster openness and reduce stigma. Ambitious objectives for the future include extended telemedicine offerings, outreach into underserved rural areas, and targeted well-being campaigns addressing anxiety, depression, and chronic stress for students and campus workers.
